How to measure your space (so it actually fits)
- Measure the spot’s width, height, and depth with a tape — the garage bay, the basement corner, or the kitchen slot.
- Subtract clearance: about 1–2″ at the back and sides for airflow, unless the model is rated for built-in (front-venting) installation.
- For a chest freezer, leave full headroom above for the lid to open — never plan one under a low shelf or workbench. For an upright or compact freezer, leave room for the door swing — measure from the hinge side, and check whether the door is reversible if the space is tight.
- Measure the path in: doorways, stair turns, and hallways. A chest freezer’s footprint is often wider than a standard door opening, and a basement stairwell is usually the tightest squeeze.
- Compare the result to the freezer’s external dimensions, not its cubic-foot capacity. Two freezers of the same cubic feet can have very different footprints.
