Across 1,885 real, currently-priced freezer listings, the median cost of frozen storage is $66.56/cu ft — chest freezers are the cheapest space at $57.14/cu ft, compact freezers run $68.75/cu ft, and upright freezers carry the reach-in premium at $83.33/cu ft. Every number below is computed from our own live catalog — no estimates, no fabricated figures — and the full table is free to download and cite.

How to read it
- Chest freezers are the value format. No shelves, no upright door — the most storage per dollar, and the gap widens at garage/bulk sizes.
- Small capacity is expensive capacity. Under 3.5 cu ft, every type's $/cu ft jumps: the compressor and cabinet overhead is spread over less interior.
- Use it as a scam check. A large freezer priced far below the band's middle 50% deserves suspicion — our own catalog enforces a capacity-scaled price floor for exactly that reason.
Methodology (v1.0)
- Sample. 1,885 of the 2,359 models in our live catalog — every model with a real positive current price and a stated capacity. The rest are excluded, never imputed.
- Price. The lowest positive current catalog offer per model — the same "lowest current price" our product pages state. Prices as of 07/16/2026 (the catalog's own price-check date; this page never claims to be fresher than its data).
- Cells. Freezer type × the same capacity bands the site filters by. A cell publishes only at n ≥ 30.
- What we deliberately do not publish yet. A month-over-month price trend (too little deep price history today — we snapshot this benchmark with every catalog price refresh so a real series accrues) and an energy-efficiency index (energy-use coverage in the catalog is currently far too thin). When the data can support them honestly, they ship.

How is the $/cu ft benchmark calculated?
For every model in our catalog with a real positive price and a stated capacity (1,885 of 2,359 models), we divide its lowest current catalog price by its capacity in cubic feet, then report the median and interquartile range per freezer type and capacity band. A cell publishes only when at least 30 models support it.
Which freezer type is cheapest per cubic foot?
Chest freezers. Across our current catalog they carry the lowest median cost per cubic foot of storage, which matches how they are built: no shelving, minimal door hardware, and the best cold retention per dollar. Uprights charge a premium for reach-in convenience, and small-capacity units of any type cost the most per cubic foot because the compressor and cabinet overhead is spread over less space.

Why is there no month-over-month price trend yet?
Because publishing one today would not be honest: only a small fraction of our catalog carries deep price history. We record a dated snapshot of this benchmark with every catalog price refresh, and we will publish the series once enough real snapshots have accrued to support it.
